That’s right, folks! Well, we’re not quite there yet. Tonight, we’re heading (Mid)West to see the marvelous Krauskopf family for Thanksgiving. And my, isn’t it a pretty day for traveling! NOT. A torrential rainstorm from 7:00-11:00AM today, coupled with the icy wind, has made for quite the unfortunate travel day. Despite the crap-tastic weather situation, we are supposedly getting on a plane tonight at 7:00PM. We can’t wait to be with family and friends, and to nom some delish food 🙂
So Willy and myself have been spending a lot of QT lately. We’ve been having culinary adventures left and right, and we’ve been out running occasionally to offset the whipped cream and meringue, the chewy oatmeal cookies, the Parano and Beemster cheeses, the mini chocolate chips, challah bread, and (lotsa) wine we’ve been indulging in lately…. But that’s neither here nor there. Damn it, I wish we had photographs! One day, this blog will have them, and it will be simply glorious. The four of you people out there who read this won’t be able to contain yourselves when we get photos up on here. Just sayin’.
Okay, so now for the point of my post this evening. Basically, I would like to acknowledge one simple fact:
I miss Willy. I miss him a lot.
And it’s only been 12.7 hours since I last saw him. Sad Nilly/Pathetic Nilly. Wow.
My schedule at work has been slightly all-over-the-place, and so has Willy’s. In addition, I’m in the process of moving into a new place, and Willy is wrapping up his season for the TV show. Thus, we’ve had to put our day-in/day-out QT on hold for a few days until things settle down in our personal lives. It’s a bummer, because Willy makes me smile all the time. He also makes me delicious chicken dinners and cups of coffee in the mornings. And the worst part is that I seriously struggle with crossword puzzles without his wit and problem-solving skillz. He’s just the best. And when you have the best once, you just want the best all.the.time. Which is how often I want to be with Willy. So, yeah. I miss Willy.
Willy, if you read this, I hope it finds you happy, healthy, and sleeping. (Because you truly don’t get enough of that sleep stuff.)

I don’t even know where to begin with this update. We’ve done so much. We had our first two Iron Chef battles. We’ve made tons of delicious food and we’ve been to Atlanta to visit my family. I’ll let Nilly relate that story to you. I’d like to highlight some of the places we ate, though. My family loves food so we had a number of places for Nilly to try. We hit Cafe Sunflower, Fogo de Chao, Marti’s at Midday (on an excursion to UGA, my alma mater), and the Wright Gourmet. I made sure to get to Chick-fil-a at least once, too. My mom also had some outrageously tasty food and Nilly’s favorite, Brown Gold.
But let’s go in order. We’ve tried a couple of new things lately including these amazing Shrimp and Avocado Tostadas. We changed it a little bit and just did tacos with homemade tortillas, which are rapidly becoming a specialty of mine. These are delicious and so simple to make. We both love shrimp and avocados, so we were very excited to find this recipe.
We also tried a scone recipe. They came out pretty well, but we added chocolate chips and later regretted it. We’d have preferred a plain scone and just to nibble the chips for dessert.
On to the battles!
You may be aware that Hurricane Irene was supposed to make a mess of things in Boston last weekend. Well, it didn’t. But it did blow some trees and power lines over so Nilly got out of work. To fill our time, we jumped into a recipeless Iron Chef Cupcake Battle. I went for a Lemoncello cupcake with Kahlua frosting. It was honestly a bit of a disaster. I don’t know the recipe for cupcakes so I was kind of winging it. Also, we didn’t have cream so I substituted 2% milk. That doesn’t work, especially when you add Kahlua to make it even thinner. Oh well. Nilly did a whole wheat cupcake with a hint of chili powder and balsamic icing. It was really good. Joseph, the doorman, served as our judge. He declared Nilly the winner without hesitation.
We had so much fun with the cupcakes we decided to battle again for dinner. This time the secret ingredient was Chicken. We had 10 minutes and about $5 to spend on ingredients at the Goose. Then we had 35 minutes to cook. I did a spicy chicken chili. It had chicken, onion, tomato, celery, jalapeno, and a bit of cocoa and chili powder among other seasonings. I had homemade tortilla chips on the side (I told you I’m getting good at them). Nilly did a chili-lime breaded chicken with yellow squash and zucchini fries and some other side we can’t remember. When she first squeezed the limes I thought I was in trouble. It smelled fantastic. Joseph deliberated a bit longer on this one and gave us a little breakdown with some ambiguous pointing. He said the lime was a bit strong on Nilly’s and chose mine as the winner! Actually he said “this one” was too strong and he liked “this one” better. He moved his hand about 1 mm and I couldn’t tell which he was talking about. I had to ask him.
We’re planning to do another Iron Chef today because it’s Haymarket Day! We’re thinking about getting our secret ingredient from Mercato del Mare so watch out for some flying seafood.

Nom, nom, nom,
So Willy and I have not really been updating our adventures lately. Apologies to our readers. Suffice it to say that we have both been insanely busy at work with both of our jobs… BUT we’ve still been making messes–err, memories–in the kitchen, in the city, in the apartment, and generally everywhere we go.
- Willy made me sit down and watch my first full-length feature, Up! I actually sat through the entire movie. And I cried. Three times. The first time was 4 minutes into the film. It was beautiful, adorable, funny, and thought-provoking. And I think I broke the Nilly-can’t-sit-still-for-an-hour-and-a-half-while-focusing-on-one-thing curse!
- Willy started filming his TV show for PBS! Many of you may not know that Willy is a Woodworker, and he works as a technical advisor and occasional guest celebrity on a PBS woodworking show. Season 2 filming started in late June, and Willy has been working tirelessly to ensure that not only do the procedures run smoothly, but that the piecrust tables and the dressing mirrors are, um, roughly cut and ready to go.
- Willy and I celebrated our 6 month anniversary at the greatest worst Italian restaurant where we had our first official (read: awkward) date! The first time, I think we bonded over the perplexing atrocity of the “Grapenut pudding” dessert, which we were told was a local favorite and was quite popular with the elderly patrons…. This time, there were actual Grapenuts in the pudding, and it tasted a little less like bacon and more like, well, Grapenuts, I guess? So the food sucked pretty badly there, and Willy’s dish swam in cheese while my chicken was so dry it tasted like jerky. While I hardly consider myself a wine-o after our explorations and weekly adventures at The Wine Bottega, I knew that this house red was pretty nasty. Ah, well! Frankly, we just reveled in the fact that we somehow made it to Date #2 after that crappy excuse for an Italian restaurant. We laughed and kissed and sat on the same side of the booth. Yeah, there were booths. That’s how classy this place was…. 😉 We’ll be back on the next big anniversary, for sure.
- We baked sourdough bread!!!! Okay, not really. We faked it. We used low fat yogurt in the bread to simulate that “sour” taste. I found a recipe that seemed easy enough in the Betty Crocker Cookbook. The bread turned out quite dense. One might even call it uncooked… but we’ll just say dense instead. Whatever. It tasted good with peanut butter and honey on top.
- We love peanut butter. Natural peanut butter. With the oil on top you have to stir. Benjamin Franklin once said that “peanut butter is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy.” He was such a smart founding father.
- We also love wine. We’ve been to a couple tastings at the Bottega recently, and last time was the Reisling tasting. Willy went nuts. He loved ’em! I am notoriously picky with whites, and I will tell you, I actually enjoyed the Reislings–especially the one that Willy bought at the end! Delicious, light, and summery. I also nabbed a cheap bottle of Pinot Noir on my way out… but that’s just habit.
- Willy treated me to sushi in Christopher Columbus Park! We went to the local (and only) fish market, chatted with the owner about life/fish, and nagged a crossword puzzle to wash our Volcano Roll down. We parked it right under a tree and nommed our way into sushi heaven. We didn’t finish the crossword yet, but we will soon.
Well, this may be our longest post ever! Apologies for the lack of images. I hope to be getting a new digital camera soon, then we will be documenting these events with photos. Trust us: we live pretty damn good lives, Willy/Nilly style, and we want you to have access to the awesomeness.
Willy is away this weekend 😦 …… He’s jetted off to Florida to soak up some sun and to see his lovely family. I miss him. He will come back here very tan, and I will be jealous. But I hope he’s having fun, and I send him and his family all of my love.
Today is Day #2 of Fake Life with Schweetsies. Willy and I have been commissioned to watch over the three best dogs in the world: Bela, Buddy, and Murphy.
Bela is 8, and supposedly a “Newfoundland”… although, we’re fairly certain she’s a lab or something. She’s the sweetest, most docile of the three. She is also probably the smartest.
Buddy, 11, is a full-blown Newfoundland. All fluff. 160 pounds of solid fluff. He bumbles about and expects to have a fried egg every morning. We deliver.
Murphy is our primary charge. He is a 4-month old Newfie, and he’s figuring out the world. Murphy has a very sheltered, structured life, which includes something called “raw feeding”. The pup literally consumes over a pound of raw turkey, vegetables, and supplements a day. He eats better than 97.59% of the world’s population. And he’s probably going to require therapy later on in his adult doggy life 🙂
We are thoroughly enjoying our time here! There’s a grill that we intend to make full use of in the next couple of days. So we’ll be cooking up our normal Willy-Nilly Experimental Fare. Expect some STEAK and CHICKEN, on the grill, possibly with a nice IPA or a summer Belgian beer. Yaaaay. Oh, and there’s a hot-tub, too. Yaaaaaay even more.
Wine, too. And cooking and baking. We generally make messes in the kitchen during our free time. We find them quite entertaining, so we decided to share. Nilly’s noting that first posts are odd, but I think that she really means that blogs are odd. Who’s going to read this? We don’t know. We really love food stuff and if we can describe our love compellingly, then we can make money! woot
